President Donald Trump has ended all trade talks with Canada, claiming the country “fraudulently used” a clip of Ronald Reagan in an ad.
The ad, from Ontario, used a 1987 clip of Reagan criticizing tariffs. Trump called this “egregious behavior” in a post on social.
He claimed the “fake” ad was an attempt to interfere with US supreme court hearings on his 35% tariffs on Canadian goods.
The ad has also been condemned by the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation. They stated the “selective audio” “misrepresents” the former president’s full message.
The halt in talks, confirmed by secretary of state Marco Rubio, jeopardizes a vital trade relationship, as over 75% of Canadian exports go to the US.
