Escalating Iran-US Tensions Push Oil Market to Over 7% Increase

In a significant market development, global oil prices have surged by more than 7% amid escalating military tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Saudi Arabia. Concerns about potential disruptions to global energy supplies have driven this increase, with Brent crude oil prices rising nearly 8% to approximately $90.75 per barrel and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) climbing almost 7% to around $84.76 per barrel. The recent spike in prices follows renewed military exchanges in the region, which have stoked fears of an extended conflict.

The situation intensified after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for launching ballistic missiles at U.S. military facilities located in Jordan, citing retaliation for recent U.S. military actions. Concurrently, U.S. and Saudi forces executed coordinated attacks on Iran-backed militant positions in Iraq. These operations, according to the U.S. and Saudi officials, targeted logistics and weapons sites linked to repeated drone assaults on military and energy infrastructure.

The conflict has further heightened concerns about maritime security in key transit routes. The IRGC reported that its naval forces intercepted and attacked three oil tankers in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, accusing them of ignoring navigation warnings. Adding to the regional tension, Yemen’s Houthi rebels announced they had targeted a Saudi-linked oil tanker in the Red Sea, amplifying risks associated with commercial shipping in the area.

The instability in the region has exacerbated fears of disruptions in oil supply through the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which are among the most critical energy transit routes globally. Market analysts have cautioned that continued hostilities impacting shipping and energy infrastructure could sustain elevated oil prices and contribute to increased volatility in global markets.
